BASIC YKB

Certificate of professional competence

At Jarla Trafikskola Älvsjö we offer YKB, which is an abbreviation of Yrkeskompetensbevis and is a compulsory certificate for you as a professional driver of buses and trucks. Since 2008, it is a legal requirement that you, as a driver of a commercial vehicle, must have the skills required for the profession. Among other things, the law requires basic training which, after passing an exam, gives you a valid professional competence certificate for five years. Thereafter, an updated certificate is required through periodic training.

What does it mean to complete a YKB training?

Are you training to become a professional truck or bus driver? Then you need to ensure that you have a valid YKB. At Jarla Trafikskola, we offer two different basic courses for a professional driver's license - a long course and a shorter course:

  • 140 hours
  • 35 hours

To be eligible for training, you must be 23 years old or older. Alternatively, you must be at least 21 years old and are training to become a driver for a bus route not exceeding 50 km in length.

If the application is not open, you can send us your expression of interest at Jarla Trafikskola and we will contact you when the applications start!

140 hours

Training to become a truck or bus driver requires good knowledge and skills in the field. For this reason, it is therefore necessary for you as a driver to have a valid professional driving licence (YKB) in addition to a driving licence with a C, CE or D rating.

To get your professional driving licence, you must complete a basic training course. The training ends with an exam at the Finnish Transport Agency, which you must pass in order to get your certificate. If you are under 21, the basic training course is 280 hours, and if you are over 21, it is 140 hours.

The 140-hour course requires a minimum of 10 hours of driving training, some of which is included in the allocated course time and some of which is carried out as part of the course but in addition to the regular course time.

The certificate of professional competence is valid for five years. After that, you are required to renew your certificate through 35 hours of continuing education.

280h

For those under 21 years old, the basic training for the Professional Driver's Licence consists of 280 hours - a combination of all the course elements that will make it easy for you to achieve your goal and train to become a professional driver. The training includes:

● 16 driving hours by truck

● Truck rental for exams

● Theory material

35 hours

Your certificate of professional competence is valid for five years. After that, you will have to take a course to renew your licence. The training consists of 35 hours, which you can either complete in full or divide into five parts of 7 hours each. The training is covered by grandfather rights. This means that if you have a C, CE, D or DE driving licence obtained before the law came into force, you do not need to undergo basic training and take a test to keep your YKB. However, you will be required to undergo continuous training in accordance with the same principle.

What does the training cover?

The training covers a number of important elements for you to start your journey towards becoming a professional driver. Among other things, you will learn about:

  • Safety regulations to consider in your role as a professional driver
  • Review of current laws and regulations
  • Eco-friendly driving
  • Health and training for professional drivers

To complete the course, you will take a driver's test at the Finnish Transport Administration. In order to provide a professional competence certificate, you must therefore have completed all parts of the basic training and passed the driver's test.

What is required of you to become a professional truck driver?

Working in passenger and freight transport by bus and lorry is a job that requires great responsibility, the right knowledge and good skills. Every five years, therefore, it is a requirement to undergo further training. The training consists of 35 hours and a number of sub-courses of at least 7 hours each.
